The Prez Says….
On the
weekend of the 16th & 17th of March, Thomas and I went to
Albany for the Chimtimini Kennel Club shows. Elsewhere in the
newsletter you will read about who the winners were in our breed.
It was a pleasure to see so many of our club members there. We saw
Pat McCann (a ring steward both days), Bill and Evelyn Brand (who
came up early for the bulldog specialty), Ed and Celia Arnold,
Hope Goodwin, and Kim Bass. Linda Stent was there Saturday but was
not feeling well and stayed home on Sunday. Thanks to Linda and
Kim for providing transportation for Bob Roser to get to the
shows. Bob told us that the way is clear for him to get his
driver's license back within the next two weeks. We are happy for
you, Bob, we know that you are looking forward to the freedom
which that will provide. Bob brought the trophy for all to see,
which he is donating to the club as the perpetual Margaret Roser
Memorial Trophy. It will be awarded each year at our specialty to
the entry judged as Best Bred By Exhibiter. The trophy was left
with Pat who will get a plaque appropriately engraved.
Of
course, the most common conversation topics were centered around
our specialty show and how we were progressing on our
preparations. Pat said we only have about $2556 in the club
account and $365 of that has to go for our liability insurance.
We're not sure if that is a single event cost or if that includes
all events for a year (such as puppy matches, etc.).
Kim said
that she had met someone online who wants to join our club. Her
name is Shana Blumenberg of Walla Walla, Washington. She has
Kismet Kennels and owns two Bostons and a Pit Bull. She has been
raising dogs since 1996 and has finished one.
Several
questions came up which I didn't have answers for and will need to
contact Charles to find out, such as "Are we going to be able
to reserve the same parking area that we had last year?",
"When will we get to proof read the premium list?"(to
verify trophies being given, mention of memorial for Margaret and
Aubrey, etc.), "What is the deadline for ads in our
catalogue?" and "Who do we send the ads to?".
Someone asked if I had heard from Sue Bane about how our trophies
were progressing and about how many sponsors she had gotten. Maybe
she can let us know at our April meeting.
The club
recently received a request and opportunity to recommend judges
that we would like to have for the national specialty shows. There
are three categories of judges, conformation, obedience and
sweepstakes. Everyone there was given a chance to offer
suggestions for this list. Thanks for your help.
Kim
showed us some coasters and mouse pads that could be made and sold
to help raise money. Club members could even submit pictures of
their own dogs and thereby get custom-made products. At our April
21 meeting there will be a representative to show us other
promotional items that could act as fund-raisers for our club.
Don't
forget that we have only two more meetings before the specialty.
Let's all attend so that we can get all the work done that is
needed to make this year's show another success. |

A certain kind of strength
( submitted by Pat McCann)
Making the e-mail rounds in cyberspace: this moving tribute to Inner
Strength, sometimes sent with the accompanying observance about how
important it is to keep our perspective in these trying times:
Inner Strength
If you can start the day without caffeine
or pep pills,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your
troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you
time,
If you can overlook when people take things out on you when,
through no fault of your own, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs…
Then you are probably the family dog.

The Boston
By Robert Roser
( printed with permission)
A Boston isn’t a big dog,
If you’re talking weight or height.
But if you’re talking smarts,
They are sure a mighty mite.
They keep themselves so clean and neat,
They’re even dainty when they eat.
They make a bed there in your lap,
And settle down to take a nap.
And when at last it’s beddy-bye,
Into your bed they‘re sure to fly.
But wait, but wait, there’s more,
You haven’t lived till you’ve heard them snore. |

At the suggestion of
several club members, this article is printed to help assist many of
our members who do not show their dogs that they may have a better
understanding of why many of us are show dog fanatics, how a dog
show works, the different classes and divisions, the various types
of winners, and what they can expect to see while attending one. Be
careful though… if you get bitten by the show bug, it will change
your life dramatically!
A Guide to Dog Shows
(from the AKC Website)
The American Kennel
Club was established in 1884 to promote the study, breeding,
exhibiting and advancement of purebred dogs. It is the largest
not-for-profit purebred dog registry in the nation.
The AKC approves and maintains the official records of over 15,000
sanctioned and licensed events each year.
The AKC has approximately 500 member clubs and over 4,000 affiliated
clubs. These clubs are more than show-giving entities. They are
public service, educational organizations whose activities benefit
their entire community. Some AKC club activities include public
education through presentations at schools, fairs, libraries,
shelters, hospitals, rescue leagues, scouts and 4-H; training
classes; and health clinics.
AKC registration means a dog, its parents, and its ancestors are
purebred. It does not indicate health or quality. Dogs registered
with the AKC can have their offspring registered and compete in AKC
events.
The
World of Dog Shows
Showing dogs is a great
sport where the thrill of competition is combined with the joy of
seeing beautiful dogs. Dog shows are one of many types of AKC dog
events in which AKC-registered dogs can compete. These events, which
draw nearly two million entries annually, include dog shows and
tests of instinct and trainability, such as obedience trials, Canine
Good Citizen tests, field trials, agility trials, lure coursing,
rally, hunting tests, herding trials, tracking tests, coonhound and
earthdog events.
Dog shows (conformation events) are intended to evaluate breeding
stock. The size of these events ranges from large all-breed shows,
with over 3,000 dogs entered, to small local specialty club shows,
featuring a specific breed. The dog's conformation (overall
appearance and structure), an indication of the dog's ability to
produce quality puppies, is judged.
Types
of Conformation Dog Shows
There are three
types of conformation dog shows:
All-breed shows
offer competitions for over 150 breeds and varieties of dogs
recognized by the AKC. All-breed shows are the type often shown on
television
Specialty shows are restricted to dogs of a specific breed or
to varieties of one breed. For example, the Bulldog Club of America
Specialty is for Bulldogs only, but the Poodle Club of America's
specialty show includes the three varieties of the Poodle -
Standard, Miniature and Toy.
Group shows are limited to dogs belonging to one of the seven
groups. For example, the Potomac Hound Group show features only
breeds belonging to the Hound group.
Which
Dogs May Participate
To be eligible to compete,
a dog must:
- be individually
registered with the American Kennel Club
- be 6 months of age or
older
- be a breed for which
classes are offered at a show
- meet any eligibility
requirements in the written standard for its breed
Spayed or neutered
dogs are not eligible to compete in conformation classes at a dog
show, because the purpose of a dog show is to evaluate breeding
stock.
The Role of
the Judge
Judges examine the dogs, then give awards
according to how closely each dog compares to the judge's mental
image of the "perfect" dog described in the breed's official
standard.
The standard describes the characteristics that allow the breed to
perform the function for which it was bred. These standards include
specifications for structure, temperament and movement. In short,
they
The official written standard for each breed is maintained by the
breed's national club and is included in the The Complete Dog Book
published by the AKC.
The judges are experts on the breeds they are judging. They examine
("go over") each dog with their hands to see if the teeth,
muscles, bones and coat texture conform to the breed's standard.
They view each dog in profile for overall balance, and watch each
dog gait ("move") to see how all of those features fit
together in action.

Boston Phonics issue… |
