The Adventures of Jet

As told by BJ…

My name is B.J., and this is Jet.Jet's a Boston you haven't met yet.

We're East Coast swingers, he and I, and like most single dudes, we live for Sunday mornings and cohabit in a precariously established system of checks and balances.

I work, a reluctant participant in the Rat Race.  He keeps me sane.

I'm not industrious by any means, often preferring web-surfing or watching hockey to, say, doing laundry or paying bills .  But I do suffer from periodic bouts of productivity and will occasionally read-up on career-related things or study (GASP!) for my upcoming, career-related exam.

But through all this, Jet reminds me about the truly important things.

Like how a roll in the grass is the key to happiness.  As is chewing an evil stick to a soggy nub.

A game of Toss-And-Keep-Away (he feels "Fetch" is a bit demeaning, I think) is also a key to happiness.

Napping in a sunbeam, nested on the back of the couch, is key to happiness.

Shredding used paper towel rolls, it seems, is also a key to happiness.

Come to think of it, Jet owns many of the keys to happiness!

He's got so many, he could very well be the "High School Janitor of Happiness", a full keyring merrily jingling as he saunters down empty halls.

Jet's the Oscar Madison to my Felix Unger (though I am, by no stretch of the imagination, a neatnik).  The Id to my Ego.

Like now, as I write this, he's sitting by the door yammering to go out.

We just went out 20 minutes ago.  Just to lie on the lawn and chew sticks.  And 30 minutes before that, we were out for the "Official Walk".  But Jet knows what's cookin'- a 60 degree day here on Long Island.

Finally, it's feeling a whole lot like Spring after a particularly snowy winter.  And Jet's not going to waste any of it sitting inside, watching from a window like he does 5 days a week while I'm away Rat-Racing.  Not when he can be out, rolling on his back in the weak, spring grass.  Like he's doing now.

The late Sunday morning sunshine bastes his brindle body with warmth.  It must because I can feel it too.

He stretches and his lids grow heavy as he languidly lengthens himself and poses, a modern-day, mini-sphinx.  Lethargic but absorbing all around him.

Jet is my own Riddle Guardian, keeping the secrets of happiness close to his barrel chest but willing to share the answers if I only bother to look.

And so, to you Pacific Northwesters, we from a recently-thawed East Coast bid you a hearty "Good Morning!".

Enjoy your first cup of coffee, we've already polished off a pot.  And look for some happy news in the over-sized Sunday paper.

But, most of all, look at your own little sphinx, your own Keeper of Secrets.  Of all the things you have shared, what more can he or she, brindle, black or otherwise, show you?

For me?  Well, let's just say that I've got the Softee-Catch frisbee in my hand, Jet's done rolling in the grass and has a crazed look in his eye, its Sunday and it actually feels like Spring.  Feel free to fill in the blanks.
