~ Silent Auction ~

The 64th Annual Boston Terrier Club of Portland Specialty Show & Sweepstakes will soon be upon us, and with it will come our annual meeting, luncheon, raffle, and silent auction. We anticipate it being an exciting and fun event, with good judges (hehe), good food, and excellent conversation (excellent because the subject of those conversations will be BOSTONS!) Donations of items for the silent auction are crucial and beneficial for the betterment of the Club and the Boston Terrier breed we all love so much. We ask that EVERYONE please bring an item to the auction, no matter how small or how large; ALL donations are welcome. If you don’t have an item we can auction, by all means feel free to donate $$ for our cause! Please either contact Thomas Sunday regarding your donation, or bring it with you to the show.

And don’t forget to bring extra $$ for bidding on those "gotta have" items!!

WHY is it when I’m feeling blue, I know that I can depend on you?

WHY is it that my every mood, is brightened by your attitude?

WHY is it no human can do, the kind of things I get from you?

WHY do I feel we really rap, from your just laying on my lap?

WHY can I feel the world’s okay, because you came along my way?

WHY did you reach deep into my heart, with warming love right from the start:

These things I guess I’ll never know, but I do know they are so.

My dog and I ---We are as one, enjoying life here in the sun.

EXHIBITOR'S PRAYER

Dear Protector of Dogs and Fools:

When that intelligent, hardworking, honest judge finally sees what I see in this dog I've worked so hard and long with, help me to accept my win with grace and dignity.

And, when that blind, clueless idiot -- I mean, judge -- somehow fails to see what a fine job we've done, (well, at least better than the so-and-so he placed ahead of us!), help me to accept my defeat with some of that same grace and dignity.

Lord, you alone know how I've sweated blood over this dog, the hours I've spent getting her ready (and, Lord, are any of them ever ready?). You (and probably only you!) understand why I've spent good money on this animal...money I could have spent on lots of other things -- things that just might have afforded me a little more pleasure and a lot less frustration.

Lord, tolerate my disappointment when I lose, and help me keep it all in perspective. Help me remember that when some dog show judge gives me the gate, it's not as if St. Peter just gave me those pearly ones.

Lord, clear my eyes and help me see, *before* I open my big mouth, that the so-and-so with the cow-hocked, pony-gaited dink walking out of the ring ahead of me is actually a fellow exhibitor who has also worked hard, maybe even sweated blood over *his* dog too, and probably deserves to enjoy this moment to its fullest while it lasts.

Lord, you know there are sometimes -- but not nearly as often as I tend to suppose when I lose -- such ugly things as Politics, Prejudice, and Unethical Practices, which may cause my dog to get beaten unfairly -- sometimes. Help me, then, to remember that several wrongs won't ever make a right, and that none of the wrongs gives me an excuse to act like an idiot.

You know I'm a competitor, Lord; I make no bones about that. I love to win and I hate to get beat. There are few things more abhorrent to me, Lord, than placing sixth out of six.

If I didn't love to compete, I'd stay home and knit afghans. But then, there are probably afghan shows, and people who hire professional knitters with high-tech knitting machines, and most
likely there are afghan show judges who raise sheep whose wool goes into some of the winningest afghans, and there I'd be -- still frustrated, still getting beat, and without a dog to share half the blame.

This year, Lord, help me to have a little more faith in my fellow dog folks, and for Heaven's sake, help me win, or lose, with a little class.

At the suggestion of several club members, this article is printed to help assist many of our members who do not show their dogs that they may have a better understanding of why many of us are show dog fanatics, how a dog show works, the different classes and divisions, the various types of winners, and what they can expect to see while attending one. Be careful though… if you get bitten by the show bug, it will change your life dramatically!

A Guide to Dog Shows (Continued from last issue) Part 2 of 4

(from the AKC Website)

How A Dog Show Works

Each dog presented to a judge is exhibited ("handled") by its owner, breeder or a hired professional. The role of a handler is similar to that of a jockey who rides a horse around the track and, hopefully, into the winner's circle.

Most dogs in competition at conformation shows are competing for points toward their AKC championships. It takes fifteen points, including two majors (wins of three, four or five points) awarded by at least three different judges, to become an American Kennel Club "Champion of Record."

The number of championship points awarded at a show depends on the number of males ("dogs") and females ("bitches") of the breed actually in competition. The larger the entry, the greater the number of points a male or a female can win. The maximum number of points awarded to a dog at any show is 5 points.

Males and females compete separately within their respective breeds, in six regular classes. The following classes are offered, and are divided by sex:

Puppy - dogs between six and twelve months of age, that are not yet champions.

Twelve-To-Eighteen Months - dogs twelve to eighteen months of age, that are not yet champions.

Novice - dogs that have never won a blue ribbon in any of the other classes, or have won fewer than three first place ribbons in the Novice class.

Bred By Exhibitor - the dog is not yet a champion, and the exhibitor is the breeder and the owner.

American-Bred - a dog whose parents were mated in America, and the dog was born in America. The dog is not yet a champion.

Open - any dog of the breed, at least 6 months of age.

After these classes are judged, all the dogs that won first place in a class compete again to see who is the best of the winning dogs. Males and females are judged separately. Only the best male (Winners Dog aka WD) and the best female (Winners Bitch aka WB) receive championship points. The Winners Dog and Winners Bitch then compete with the champions for the Best of Breed award. At the end of the Best of Breed Competition, three awards are usually given:

Best of Breed - the dog judged as the best in its breed category.

Best of Winners - the dog judged as the better of the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch.

Best of Opposite Sex - the best dog that is the opposite sex to the Best of Breed winner.

Sporting - These dogs were bred to hunt game birds both on land and in the water. The breeds in this group include Pointers, Retrievers, Setters and Spaniels.

Hounds - These breeds were bred for hunting other game by sight or scent. These breeds include such dogs as Beagles, Bassets, Dachshunds and Greyhounds.

Working - These dogs were bred to pull carts, guard property and perform search and rescue services. Among the breeds in this group are the Akita, Boxer, Doberman Pinscher and St. Bernard.

Terrier - This group includes breeds such as the Airedale, Cairn Terrier and Scottish Terrier. Terriers were bred to rid property of vermin such as rats.

Toy - These dogs were bred to be household companions. This group includes little dogs such as the Chihuahua, Maltese, Pomeranian and Pug.

Non-Sporting - This diverse group includes the Chow Chow, Bulldog, Dalmatian and Poodle. These dogs vary in size and function, and many are considered companion dogs.

Herding - These dogs were bred to help shepherds and ranchers herd their livestock. The Briard, Collie, German Shepherd Dog and Old English Sheepdog are some of the breeds in this group.

Finally, the seven group winners are brought into the ring where they compete for Best In Show, the highest award at a dog show.

This article will be continued in the next Boston Phonics issue…
