Poems for the dog

       three Little Puppies

Three little puppies,

Owned by yuppies,

With Persian rugs in the hall.

“Oh, Mother dear,

We sadly fear,

We’ve messed them one and all.”

“You naughty mutts

you must be nuts

When nature’s call you heed.

“Just go outdoors,

Not on my floors,

And do it with due speed.

The Adventures of Jet

As told by BJ…

What little it takes, to get our guys happy.

Came home today. Allergy season has begun. Feeling tired and eyes felt raw. Jet did not have an accident though a subtle smell permeated the kitchen. A Swiffering is in order.

I walk him and feed him and descend into the Basement to check e-mail and for a quick round of WarcraftIII. For those of you with game-playing Y-chromos in your life, get them this game. It rocks. But it's also highly addictive.

One round turned into 2 and, before I knew it, I had been downstairs for a couple of hours. Thanks to Daylight Savings Time, it was still bright out so, guilt ridden, I went up to take Jet for another walk.

And this is the crux of the subject heading:

I peep into the kitchen and standing there, by the gate, is Jet, peering at me from below the crossbar.

I lift a leg to go into the kitchen and he goes bananas the way Bostons only can, legs splayed wide open, prancing on the tiles and grabbing the nearest toy to entice me into a game of Fetch, Chase-and-Run, Tug-O-War... ANYTHING! (he seemed to say).

I grab the knotty rope and take it outside with us. As we walk by the lake, the temp is perfect. A cooler evening but warm enough for me to wander about the yard, still in my scrubs, and not feel a chill.

Jet sniffs some purple flowers by the lake and I notice how the sky looks surreal. Like a pastel painting. Like one of Mr. Happy, Art Ross' works.

"Hmmm. Now let's paint a happy little tree over here." I hear in my head "That's good. And now, a happy little dog..."

I look at Jet. He's sprawled on the grass rolling in something biodegradable. But I don't stop him this time. I just spent two hours, in a dark basement, whoopin' my friend in an online computer game. Who am I to criticize what constitutes one's pleasure? Who am I to deny him this when he's been waiting all day long for a simple romp on the lawn?

I throw the rope and we gambol in the waning twilight and, in this moment, allergies be damned- everything makes sense and is perfect.

Tomorrow, I plan to leave the computer off until the sun goes down.

It's 11pm, EST. Have you romped with your Boston today?
