What is Musical Freestyle?

Musical freestyle is a relatively new sport that combines dog obedience and dance in a way that is totally unique and exciting. It blends dog obedience and dance presenting a visually exciting display of handler and canine teamwork. The handler and dog perform dance-oriented footwork in time to the music, rather than displaying the traditional walking pace of obedience. Heeling is an important component of freestyle but non-standard movements are also expected to be displayed by the dog along with attention, enthusiasm, and a degree of difficulty over and above that which is normally seen in the obedience ring. A variety of handler upper body movements are also encouraged to lend interpretation to the music. Costuming for the handler also helps to enhance the interpretation of the music and to involve spectators in the spirit of the routine. Throughout the routine the handler may encourage the dog's performance with verbal commands, but no training aids or food of any kind are permitted in the competition ring.

Many people believe you have to be a dancer or have formal dance training to compete in musical freestyle. While some movement experience and a sense of rhythm is helpful, being a dancer is not necessary. When performing, the handler must interpret the music and show some variation in speed and footwork when moving in time with the music. Observing dance performances of any type can give you ideas for routines.  Nor does your dog have to be a top-ten in obedience to participate in musical freestyle. If they are reasonably accomplished in heeling and has mastered novice level exercises, they are ready for a routine in the On-leash Division. The addition of non-standard movements such as backing or heeling on the right enhances the degree of difficulty of the routine, leading to a higher score. In the Off-leash and Masters Divisions, the dog must be capable of working off-leash as well as be able to accurately perform a variety of non-standard movements such as weaving, twisting, or circling.

Anyone interested in participating in this unique sport, please contact Kelly Estes for more information.

The 2nd Annual Boston Terrier Club of Portland

Boston Tea Party

Wow what a fun day!  It was another hot sweltering August day, and it hit close to 95 degrees, but boy did the crowds come out for this special event!  There were many old familiar faces, and quite a few new ones too.  We couldn’t have pulled it together without the help of many wonderful people.  Kelly, Tenna, Orion, Carrie, Linda, ME (hehe).  I’m sure I’ve missed someone, and my apologies if you weren’t mentioned.  And I certainly can’t forget a very special THANK YOU to BOB ROSER for opening his home and heart to us!  Bob Roser was his usual cheery and helpful self, and without his donation of the site, we would have no doubt been up that proverbial creek (and not the beautiful little creek behind his home!)  The raffle was a complete success, and we received quite a few donations, plus a couple of new membership applications.  I DID remember to bring my camera this time!  So I hope those of you who couldn’t attend can at least enjoy seeing in pictures what we enjoyed in person…

Kelly & I would like to say thank you to all of the club members who attended the BostonTea Party, and a special thank you to all of the people who joined us for this fun event. We couldn’t have done it without you!  We had a GREAT time, and look forward to seeing all of you NEXT YEAR!

And we would like to add a very SPECIAL thank you to Bob Roser for opening his home and heart to the club, which allowed us the opportunity to meet all the wonderful people in the Boston Terrier community.

Thank you Bob!

You’re the best!!
