The bench show at the Portland
Expo Center that is held on October 12th, has a theme
this year of “Tricks and Treats”.
I will need a couple more people to help with decorating, as
we would really like to win the purple
ribbon (AND the $100 cash!) this year. Please contact me at (360) 254-1942 if you would like to
help. I need pictures
of Boston’s standing on their hind legs, sitting up, and any
pictures of them dressed up in a costume.

The Adventures of Jet
As
told by BJ…
|
I thought if this as Jet and I
lounged in the grass. The
summer here in the Northeast has not been conducive to fun or the
outdoors. When it wasn’t Africa-hot, it was Amazon-wet.
And when it wasn’t, the mosquitoes seemed to be of both African and Amazon stock.
The weather had finally taken a
turn for the better and, upon returning home from work; Jet had exhibited
an urgency to go outside. After
a somewhat shortened ritual of butt wagging and presenting a toy in
greeting, he posted himself by the door.
Like the stone lions at the public
library he fixed his stare on me as I made a pot of coffee.
Through his silence and stillness, the utmost urgency was
expressed.
So I snapped on his collar and
leash and out we went, leaving the just- percolating pot behind.
As we hit the grass, I thought for sure he would void himself in
copious portions. I thought
for sure, he would make a beeline for the nearest tree or shrub and get on
with his pressing business. Instead,
he angled away and drove for the open expanse of lawn by the willow tree.
To me, this is his favorite spot.
I think he likes the thickness of the grass and maybe he can tell
he’s close to the water. He
likes the sunny expanse of it. In
one of my earliest memories of Jet, he is stretched out in this place,
earnestly working over a newfound stick; pieces of bark flaking off as he
chewed with a dog grin that radiated contentment.
With purpose he pulled to this spot
of lawn. With vigor and
determination. With urgency
he drove for what? Was there
a smell to investigate? Had
he left a rawhide? We get to
the dead center of the lawn where he slows to a trot, lowers his body as
if slinking and gently plops himself in the grass.
The sole purpose of getting the
hell out of the house and over to this patch was simply to nap in the
afternoon sun, his belly pressed against the cool, green blades.
I stood for a moment, his leash now
slack in my hand, and looked around me, wishing I had my coffee.
But at that moment I had much more.
I dropped the leash and sat next to
my dozing dog. He seemed to
be drawing solar power from the afternoon sun.
The light was perfect and mellow and highlighted every stalk of
grass, every yellow flower. If
you focused hard enough, you could almost drown out the sounds of passing
traffic and hear the wind moving through the treetops with a rustling
sound that harkens to hiking the Adirondacks.
Subtle, murky smells came off the lake; heavy flowers and fermented
pond scum and all things brackish. Through
my work clothes I could feel the coolness of the grass working it’s way
to my skin as the sun warmed from above.
Jet was onto something here.
I laid back, clasped my hands
behind my head and shut my eyes.
For the remainder of the afternoon
we sat there… doing nothing.
Now this was paradise.
